HEMA vs monsters Halloween Special

Classic Universal Monsters. Not swords depicted but the talk will say how to sword fight them.

Just in time for Halloween we’ll be discussing how to use real historical European weapons and fighting systems against various monsters. Have you ever wondered what sword to use against a werewolf? Or what tactics to use against a vampire? What about other monsters? Join in the fun as our panel of trained and enthusiastic sword fighters discuss the weapons and tactics they would use to in combat with various monsters.

The panel for the event with consist of Mosh Hewson, Lois Spangler and Tim.

Mosh has trained 11 years of full contact martial arts, and 4 years of HEMA, predominantly backsword and Broadsword texts from 1599-1902 and teaching such at the Fitzroy college of arms in Melbourne. He has also studied smallsword, saber, sword and buckler, sidesword and buckler and spadroon. Mosh has also been active in the LARP scene for 6 years now and has helped run small parlour LARPS to being in the team for week long festival LARPS and all kinds in between for whole weekends to single night one shots as a player and as minor to major NPC roles for events. He has lead small groups of 2-3 to entire sides of up to 300 many occasions and once had to do a 1v120 fight on a Sunday morning.

Lois spent five years practicing iaido before taking up HEMA, where she’s studied la verdadera destreza for five of the last six years. While she spends a significant amount of time reading and translating primary sources of the style, she also teaches at the Brisbane School of Iberian Swordsmanship, and has presented workshops throughout the eastern half of Australia.
Lois also works as a writer, editor and enthusiastic role player. Lois has published several short stories on top of an impressive body of HEMA translation work. Tim has trained in HEMA for close to 15 years, focussing primarily on Victorian Era sabre, cultass, knife and duelling swords. They have also practised broadsword, sword & buckler, bayonet, cane fighting, and Viking Age weapons. Tim has experience in unarmed martial arts having practised boxing, submission wrestling and tae kwon do. In addition Tim is a historian with a particular focus on the Viking Age and the 19th century, also with having done Viking Age and Medieval re-enactment, and an experienced role player.
